Group of fishermen suggest to delay the opening of lobster season
The Association of the inshore lobster fishermen asked fisheries and Oceans to push back the opening of the season a week. According to its president, David Burke, the cold temperatures of April will guarantee a low catch rate if the opening date is maintained to the fifth of may, as suggested by the Advisory Committee. He believes that it is a matter of fairness, since fishermen of Grosse île, Étang du Nord and Pointe aux Loup would benefit from a better start of the season from May 12, without penalising those in the South of the archipelago:
On the other hand, the English association asked DFO to survey all of the lobster fishermen to establish an official opening date in the future, setting for may 10th, regardless of the day of the week:
According to the president of the Association of the inshore lobster fishermen of the Islands, several fishermen are not satisfied with their representation in the Advisory Committee, regarding the topic of the opening date.
