DFO confirms the opening date of lobster season

The area 22 lobster fishing season will start may 5.

That’s what fisheries and Oceans confirmed Wednesday, following a meeting with the Committee on the opening date, which brings together representatives of each fishing port.

The Inshore fishermen association had raised concerns about the cold water temperature, which is still far from the target of one point five to 30 meters of depth according to the experts of the IML and Merinov.

The Director of the local DFO Office, Cédric Arseneau is reassuring regarding the impact of the cold temperatures on the catch rate, highlighting the different context of the 2016 season, which had been disappointing in the early landings of season.

Mr. Arseneau added that the petition brought Wednesday by the president of the Inshore fisherman association, which presented 200 votes for a postponement, and only 19 for the maintenance of May 5, was considered, but did not convince all members of the Committee.

Although the official date of May 5 is maintained, winds above 20 knots or the replenishment of a channel could cause a postponement.
